Description

Grotto of Ustim Karmalyuk

The grotto, hollowed out in a rock in 1830, is popularly called the Karmalyuk Hut. In the corner of the inside room there is a stove, stone benches along the wall, and a spooned-out window. According to legend, it was here that Ustim Karmalyuk, a ‘Ukrainian Robin Hood’, the leader of the early 19th century anti-serfdom uprising in the right-bank Ukraine, was hiding from his pursuers. More than 20 thousand peasants took part in the rebel movement under his leadership. In the course of many years, Karmalyuk’s detachments attacked and robbed the landowners’ estates to distribute the seized money and valuables to the poor.
