Monuments to the pilot S.I. Kharkhalup, the Village of Konstantinovka

In the first days of World War II, Senior Lieutenant Semen Ivanovich Kharkhalup performed 52 air battles, destroying three enemy aircrafts. In one of the battles he managed to knock down a German bomber by a battering ram. On June 30, 1941, Semen Ivanovich died in an unequal combat action with enemy fighters. His plane crashed on the outskirts of his native village before the eyes of the villagers watching the battle, the pilot’s parents being among them. After the war, the remains of S.I. Kharhalup were reburied in the center of Konstantinovka. A monument was erected there in the shape of MiG-15 aircraft tail. It bears the inscription – Those who die in the sky for their homeland become the sky above it. Subsequently, a small memorial obelisk was also erected at the site of the pilot’s death.
