Rock monastery of the village of Roghi

Dubossary What to see in Dubossary

Description

Rock monastery of the village of Roghi

The famous skete in Dubossary district near the village of Roghi is the oldest orthodox monastery in Pridnestrovie. Although scientists still do not know the exact date of its construction, it is believed that it appeared no later than in the 16th century. The monastery is carved right inside the rock. A church and three monastic cells were built here. Modern studies have shown that the building was named after Simeon the Stolpnik.

In the interior of the monastery, you can see mysterious symbols, writings and drawings carved on the walls and ceiling. They were used to find out the approximate date of the monastery’s foundation.

The skete is located at a fairly high altitude, therefore the approach to it offers picturesque and memorable landscapes of the Nistru river and the surrounding area. There is also a small waterfall near the monastery.
