The city of Grigoriopol was founded in 1792, by the decree of Empress Catherine II. Later it was renamed into Grigoriopolis and was an Armenian colony. After the end of the Russian-Turkish war, Armenian residents were resettled here from Akkerman, Izmail, Kaushan, Kiliya.
