State Reserve “Yagorlyk”

Dubossary What to see in Dubossary

State Reserve “Yagorlyk”

“Yagorlyk” is the only scientific reserve in Pridnestrovie. It is located on the left bank of the Dniester river between the villages Tsybulevka, Goian and Doibani – 1 of the Dubossary district and covers an area of 863 hectares.

The reserve was created in 1988 to preserve the natural complex of the Goian Bay. The latter was formed when the lower reaches of the Yagorlyk river were flooded as a result of the construction of the Dubossary hydropower plant.

More than a hundred species of rare and endangered plants were discovered on the Reserve’s territory over the years of botanical research, 16 of them are included in the Red Book of Pridnestrovie. Not only the flora, but also the fauna of Yagorlyk pleases with its diversity: over 30 species of mammals live here, including roe deer, wild boars, stone martens, foxes and raccoon dogs. There are also rare animals such as European ground squirrel and ermine. About 20 fish species live in the water area of the reserve, including sturgeon – sterlet and bester. The abundance of birds found here is explained by the diversity of biotopes. Yagorlyk is home to 121 species of birds, including those listed in the Red Book: the mute swan nests here, and osprey and field harrier are found during migration.

On the hill above the bay there is an observation tower, which offers a beautiful view of the reserve and its surroundings.
